The world’s most secure linear drain

“Just over 10 years ago, the architect Claus Dyre had a brilliant idea: Why not place the floor drain against the wall instead of in the middle of the floor? He presented his idea to the Danish Building Research Institute, and together they turned the idea into reality.

Before that, the drain had to be placed in the middle of the floor, at a safe distance from the walls where the supporting elements would not be exposed to rot or mould. But Claus Dyre invented Unidrain’s patented wall flanges which go up against the wall.

Lasse Lyck, technical manager at Unidrain, explains: “The horizontal flanges are made of stainless steel, and the drain and flanges form an integrated unit. The flanges are about 5 cm high and ensure that the water from the drain never gets close to the supporting elements which cannot withstand moisture. The flanges have allowed us to move the floor drain right over to the wall of the shower cubicle. In practice, the drain is placed along the finished wall, the wet-room membrane is added, and finally the mason lays the tiles. “It is the flanges that make Unidrain the most secure floor drain in the world.

Easy, secure and quick

The invention of Unidrain was not only good news for plumbers. The mason’s job was also simplified: Instead of pouring a floor with the drain in the middle of the shower area, which requires a fall from all four sides, all the mason now has to do is lay the floor with a fall towards one wall. This has made it much easier to construct a shower cubicle, and the risk of complaints and moisture damage is reduced to a minimum with Unidrain’s linear floor drains and wall flanges.

The bathroom is the most vulnerable room in the home. This is where there is the most risk of damage – the expensive sort that can be difficult to fix. But the patented flanges have changed all that. “We have perfected the design over the years to make installation as easy as possible, saving the fitters time,” concludes Lasse Lyck.
