Copenhagen’s Latin Quarter is an area of a class of its own. The city centre at its best, with the lively green oasis of H.C. Ørstedsparken as one of its nearest neighbours.
Five narrow lanes criss-cross this Bohemian district, which offers a wealth of possibilities for both curious tourists and savvy locals. One of the lanes goes by the name Sankt Peders Stræde – an idyllic Copenhagen street where specialty shops and eateries sit side by side.
Home away from home
On this vibrant little street you will also find Hotel SP34. An exclusive boutique hotel, which fits so perfectly into its surroundings that it has been named after its address – Sankt Peders Stræde 34.
Hotel SP34 is part of the family-owned Brøchner Hotels chain, which will be running five boutique hotels in Copenhagen from June 2018. A sixth is under construction in the Carlsberg district and will open in January 2019. This is also the year in which Brøchner Hotels will be opening the chain’s first hostel in Aarhus.
“All of our boutique hotels tell their own story, which is rooted in the local area. We make a virtue of running places that create life and attract guests, neighbours and passers-by to special events, a good cup of coffee or a pleasant dinner. Hotel SP34 is no exception,” explains Mette Brøchner-Mortensen, who is responsible for the interior design. She is married to Søren Brøchner-Mortensen, whose maternal grandfather started the chain in 1982.
The local touches are unmissable at Hotel SP34, where home comfort meets cool design style. An old but restored bike from the local cycle dealer looks down over the sofa area in the lounge where hosts and hostesses welcome guests into the bar. The hotel does not have a reception desk in the traditional sense of the word.
“We want to give our guests a very special experience with a little edge. They should feel at home even though they are away. Home away from home is our motto,” Mette Brøchner-Mortensen goes on.
Exclusive and functional design solutions
Like the area, the design style of this popular hotel is in a class of its own. Here, modern Scandinavian solutions are interpreted in an original and warm-hearted way. Special design finds, classics and exclusive solutions permeate the hotel, where functionality and aesthetics predominate.
“A hotel, by its very nature, should be able to handle the many visitors who can sometimes treat the furniture a little roughly. The solutions should be able to cope. But that does not mean the aesthetic expression has to go by the board,” says Mette Brøchner-Mortensen.
This is true of the public areas as well as the rooms. And here, the bathrooms are an especially important factor in a good stay. The bathrooms in the 118 hotel rooms and suites are made up of simple but very personal Scandinavian design solutions. In the shower cubicles – both at Hotel SP34 and at the other four hotels – you will find Unidrain.
“We have chosen Unidrain’s linear drain in all of our hotels. We have never regretted it. The drains are aesthetically pleasing and also easy to clean, which is very important in a hotel where new guests check in and out every single day. In my opinion, Unidrain is ideally suited for the hotel,” concludes Mette Brøchner-Mortensen.
