In line with increasing demands for safety and treatment capacity, Bispebjerg Hospital has added 200 new beds to its psychiatric unit. For this project, Unidrain has supplied approximately 126 specially adapted floor drains for the patient rooms, designed to minimise the risk of patients harming themselves or others.
– The ability to customise products for a specific project is the beating heart of our business. By adapting how our ClassicLine floor drains are fitted, we’ve been able to meet special mental health requirements without compromising on our high standards of wetroom safety and quality, according to Architect and Project Consultant at Unidrain Christian Møller Sommer.
Quality and safety are paramount
Since the project began in April 2024, Unidrain has worked closely with the consultant behind the expansion of Bispebjerg Hospital to ensure that the solution meets the requirements for safety, quality and functionality.
– Our product department has been involved in developing the solution for Bispebjerg Hospital. To prevent patients from removing the drains and potentially using them as weapons or for self-harm, we made special holes in the drains so they can be screwed directly into the floor. This significant change makes the drains impossible to remove without tools, which all serves to protect patients and staff alike, Christian Møller Sommer explains.
Teamwork to fast-track the project
Morten Nalepa, who is project manager at GK Denmark, was in charge of installing the 126 floor drains. The teamwork impressed him greatly:
– This is an exciting and incredibly important project and we’re proud to be involved. Being able to contribute to more beds and a positive environment for vulnerable people means a lot to us. At the same time, because only the grating and the frame of the Unidrain solution were customised, basic installation was quick and efficient. This facilitated fast delivery and a smooth process, which is crucial in a project on this scale, Morten Nalepa adds.
Because only some of the drain components were a bit different, the installation process remained simple and straightforward.
The new Bispebjerg Hospital psychiatric unit is scheduled for completion in November 2025.
